Big night for Calgary at 2013 Canadian Tourism Awards
Tourism Calgary flood recovery campaign celebrated as Marketing Campaign of the Year
Ottawa, December 4, 2013 – Tourism Calgary was presented with the Canadian Tourism Awards’ Marketing Campaign of the Year Award for the “Calgary, Our Doors are Open” campaign at the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) gala ceremony held on December 3 at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa. The advertising campaign was the destination marketing organization’s response to the June flood that devastated much of Southern Alberta. The campaign changed the conversation from one of devastation to recovery – that Calgary was open for business and ready to welcome visitors.
In a big night for Calgary, several other Calgary tourism businesses were recognized for excellence:
- Calgary Stampede and the people of Calgary – President’s Award of Distinction
- Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts - Business of the Year Award
- Rocky Mountaineer (based in Vancouver, but with strong ties to the Calgary tourism community) - Employer of the Year Award
- Anderson Vacations - Small or Medium-Sized Business of the Year Award

The Canadian Tourism Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of Canada's vibrant tourism entrepreneurs and represent the best of Canada's spectacular travel and tourism industry.
“Calgary’s tourism industry is resilient, strong and comprised of incredibly talented industry partners as we saw from the results at the TIAC Canadian Tourism Awards last night,” says Jeff Hessel, Tourism Calgary acting Vice-President of Marketing. “Our industry united quickly to support the hundreds of tourism businesses and thousands of tourism and hospitality employees who needed an effective, immediate response to the flood.”
The Calgary Stampede enjoyed a standing ovation as Bob Thompson, President and Chairman of the Board, accepted the special President’s Award of Distinction from TIAC for all Calgarians’ outstanding efforts in response to the June floods. "Resiliency and community define Canada and nowhere has this been more aptly demonstrated than by the heroic efforts of the people of Calgary and the 2013 Stampede team who remarkably opened the gates, on time, only days after being hit by Alberta's most devastating floods in a generation," stated David Goldstein, TIAC President and CEO, when the award was announced.
Tourism Calgary was also presented with the 2013 Alberta Tourism Award for Marketing Excellence for the “Calgary, Our Doors are Open” campaign. The campaign also prompted Strategy Magazine to recognize Calgary’s tourism recovery from the flood as the Comeback Brand of the Year.
