Garage Montage, a group exhibition featuring 24 emerging and mid-career artists whose practices include both art-making and art administration. Garage Montage showcases the most recent chapter of independent gallery spaces, studio collectives, and networks while tracing the interconnectedness of Calgary’s dynamic under-the-radar visual arts scene. By appropriating garages, domestic spaces and derelict buildings, the artists featured in Garage Montage have created a platform to produce art and represent each other’s practices often without reliance on mainstream commercial galleries, artist run centers or government funding.
Calgary’s distinct DIY character continues to define our city’s new wave of emerging artists. The exhibition showcases the widest scope of traditional and experimental art forms including performance, installation and video along with sculpture, painting, drawing and glasswork. Garage Montage presents visitors with a rhythmic reading of artists who activate mundane spaces by channelling avant-garde approaches in display and representation, revealing the vibrant character of contemporary emerging art in Calgary. Like the networks, collectives, and galleries that are presented, this exhibition developed through research based on word of mouth, expanding with every studio visit to reveal an interconnected web of artists. Due to limited space and resources, not all artists could be included however, plans are being made for future iterations of Garage Montage at The AGC that will expand upon the rich history of DIY spaces in Calgary.
